Description
Located in windy central Kansas, the lake offers spectacular sailing opportunities and hosts national sailing regattas It's a breathtaking sight to see more than 100 multicolored sailboats on the lake at one time. The lake is also known for wind-surfing opportunities. The Ninnescah Sailing Center on the West Shore Area is the 'headquarters' for sailing at Cheney and the marina offers supplies and services for boaters and anglers.
Anglers are attracted to exciting fishing for channel catfish, white bass, crappie, striped bass, wiper and walleye. The park's 22 boat launching lanes provide convenient access to the 9,500-acre lake. The 5,200-acre Cheney Wildlife Area adjacent to the park provides a rich variety of wildlife watching, nature photography and public hunting opportunities. A refuge established in the wildlife area for migratory waterfowl is open for fishing and non-hunting day-use activities except between Sept.15 and March 15, when it is closed to all activities.
Cheney Reservoir is operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
