Hays was a focal point for many "Wild West" characters ? Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill, and Wyatt Earp. Today, it's the financial epicenter for the entire western portion of Kansas with a stronghold in manufacturing, oil, and agriculture.One of the most endearing spots in town is Chestnut Street. Quaint shops, eateries, and galleries stand ready to greet customers. A sense of being in a place where "everybody knows your name" emanates from each establishment along the way.Kids enjoy Hays Aquatic Park with its pools and slides. Several ball parks and tennis courts are scattered throughout, as are a number of golf courses. Ten lakes in the area spark a lot of water sports activities.

Hutchinson is energized by numerous retail stores and restaurants that keep the inner city alive. Everything from backyard birds to auto and trucking stores fill the town with shopping activity. One of the most interesting attractions is the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. The Center houses numerous aeronautical vehicles, a cosmic collection (including a moon rock), an IMAX theatre, and a museum highlighting the history of space science. Other points of interest include: Kansas Underground Salt Museum, Dillon Nature Center, Hutchinson Art Center, Reno County Museum, and the Yoder Amish Community. Kids enjoy Salt City Splash Aquatic Center and Hutchinson Zoo.

Junction City is located 62 miles from Topeka. It offers some nice recreational opportunities. Milford Lake, the biggest lake in Kansas, is known as the "Fishing Capitol of Kansas". There's also swimming and boating that keep the summer crowds happy. Riverwalk is a 4.8-mile path that is used for walking, jogging, horseback riding, biking and snowmobiling. A 1.2-mile paved biking and walking path is also available at South Park. According to Golf Digest, Rolling Meadows Golf Course is "one of the top ten places to play golf in Kansas.
