State capital Topeka has the expected selection of governmental sites but also find in this pleasant town a number of historic attractions, a museum or two and easily accessible lakeside activity.
This is a museum of western history that is also a reconstruction of Dodge City in the late 1800s, back when "Get out of Dodge" had real meaning. It was a rough town and this museum doesn't skimp on its reenactments. You'll walk down the boardwalk and in and out of the rebuilt buildings, but this is more than exhibits and recorded audio-visual. Don't miss the gunfights and the stagecoach rides.
